Hi, my name is Scott and I’m an addict…of raw fish.
Yes, I love sushi SO MUCH that I photograph it before I eat it.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to go all Jeremy Piven on you all and report a daily habit of sushi resulting in mercury poisoning, but I have gone all the way to Amarillo and back just to indulge in a rainbow roll, a spider roll, and the sweet sinus-burn of wassabi and soy sauce. Is this necessary, you’re probably wondering? And the answer of course is a solid YES ! We live in Clovis and you must travel to get good, real sushi.
Some people tell me just to make due with what is available. Anyone who enjoys sushi knows you don’t find good sushi at your local all you can eat Chinese buffet, which there are no short supply of here. And still, other establishments that specialize in Japanese cuisine just don’t cut it. Just the other night, my family and I decided to eat at Shogun Japanese Steakhouse on Pile Street. While I love a good teppan grill, I am depressed to find no sushi bar to go with it. On the flip side, try a bite of their seared tuna, served sashimi style, that you can yummy down on the next International Sushi Day (June 18th), but you’ll find it only scratches the itch.
This post is not here for a pity party, but more so a call to action. Like sushi? Live in Clovis? If we stick together, we can make it through these tough times sans sashimi. First Wednesday of the month good for you guys?

Great post Scott! I wish In shared your love of sushi, but the most I’ve had are California Rolls…which are GREAT, I might add!
Sushi is an obsession of mine. I miss having it about once a week. Once a month isn’t really cutting it. I have tried to only make california rolls, but crave the raw stuff. I wish I could get sashimi grade fish here. I think Albertson’s has a few sashimi grade fishes, but not enough.
That was a great post Scott! I to love, love Sushi. I also drive to Amarillo for that awesome raw fish! Im from San Antonio,TX and I really miss my SA. There is one place in Amarillo that has good sushi and I wish I lived at the apartments behind that Sushi Place. I dont like wasabi, nor sea urchin, nor egg roe. Evrything else I love.
We are new to Clovis as of last week. My husband and I met and dated in Okinawa, the best spot in the world for sushi. We love to have sushi on Lenten Fridays, and did a google search so that we could head out this evening. Your post was the most informative answer and a sad reality check. Guess we’ll be having “roll your own sushi” parties once we move into our new house…and making a regular trek to Lubbok or Albuquerque for sushi dates. Thanks for your post.
PS – We, too, photograph our sushi.
I found out today that if alberstons does not have sushi grade fish they can order it for you. Just a heads up for the home rollers
Good to know. Thanks Evan!
